L'Aventure 2000 Optimus (Paso Robles); $45. A blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Petit Verdot. Massive berry and fruit flavors, accented with natural spices and 100% new French oak, and wrapped in fancy, smooth tannins. The wine feels important on the palate, and flatters it from entry through the long, delicious finish. It's great to see Paso Robles step up to the plate and produce such world-class wine.

Stephan Ridge 2000 L'Aventure Estate Cuvée (Paso Robles); $75. An extraordinary wine. From the cooler west side of the appellation, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah offers a little something from each variety. The overall effect is a concerto, vibrant and complex. Huge oak, but the expressive fruit wears it well. Beautiful tannins coat the palate like a mink coat. Editors' Choice.
